अनन्य-साधनः श्रीमान् क्रोध-लोभ-विवर्जितः

śaraṇam—shelter; duṣkaratvam—difficult to attain; hi—indeed; vijñāya—knowing; ca—and; mahā-matiḥ—intelligent; bhṛśam—greatly; artaḥ—distressed; tataḥ—then; vipra—brāhmaṇa; śrī- gurum—to the guru; śaraṇam—shelter; vrajet—should go.

O brāhmaṇa, a wise person, aware that the shelter of the Lord is very difficult to attain, and distressed by material life, should take shelter of a bona-fide spiritual master.

English translation of verse:

It is said that a bona-fide spiritual master should be peaceful, non-envious, devoted to Lord Kṛṣṇa, not interested in things that have no relation to Lord Kṛṣṇa, not engaged in activities that have no relation to Lord Kṛṣṇa, filled with spiritual virtues, free of anger and greed, learned in the science of the nectar mellows of Lord Kṛṣṇa, expert in the mantras glorifying Lord Kṛṣṇa, always surrendered to Lord Kṛṣṇa and always taking shelter of Lord Kṛṣṇa, devoted to chanting the mantras glorifying Lord Kṛṣṇa, always pure, always pious and religious, always engaged in devotional service to the Lord, a teacher who shows his disciples how to serve the Lord, himself a disciple in the sampradāya (disciplic succession), filled with mercy, and renounced.
