77. Anuguṇa

प्राक्-प्रसिद्ध-गुणोत्कर्षोऽनुगुणः पर-सन्निधेः ॥ ११.१२cd ॥

prāk-prasiddha-guṇotkarṣo'nuguṇaḥ para-sannidheḥ || 11.12cd ||

When there is an eminence of a previously established quality on account of the proximity of another thing, that is anuguṇa (enhancement of one’s quality).

Commentary:

The definition is taken from Jayadeva’s Candrāloka (5.106) (cited in Kuvalayānanda 145). He gives this example: karṇotpalāni dadhate kaṭākṣair api nīlatām, “The blue lilies on her ears assumed a blueness also because of her sidelong glances” (Candrāloka 5.106).
