Text 10.243 [Saṃsṛṣṭi]

61. Saṃsṛṣṭi

अथ संसृष्टि-सङ्करौ दर्शयति,

atha saṃsṛṣṭi-saṅkarau darśayati,

Now he illustrates saṃsṛṣṭi (mutually independent mix of ornaments) and saṅkara (interdependent mix of ornaments). [At first, Mammaṭa defines saṃsṛṣṭi,]

seṣṭā saṃsṛṣṭir eteṣāṃ bhedenaikatra yā sthitiḥ ||10.139cd||

—that; iṣṭā—is desired [to be called such]; saṃsṛṣṭiḥ—the literary device called saṃsṛṣṭi; eteṣām—of these [ornaments]; bhedena—by a difference [of substratum]; ekatra—in one [sentence or in one verse[1] ]; —which; sthitiḥ—state of being.

If ornaments combine together in one verse in such a way that each one is independent of the others, that is called saṃsṛṣṭi.

eṣāṃ prāg-uktānāṃ mitho-nairapekṣyeṇaikatra śabda-bhāge’rtha-viṣaye ubhayatra vā sthitiḥ saṃsṛṣṭiḥ nāmālaṅkāraḥ.

When ornaments take place in one substratum without a mutual interdependence, that is the ornament called saṃsṛṣṭi. “In one substratum” means either in the portion which is the aspect of sound, in the portion which is the meaning, or both in the portion of sound and in the portion of meaning

There are three categories of saṃsṛṣṭi, (1) Two mutually independent ornaments of sound occur, (2) Two mutually independent ornaments of meaning occur, and (3) An ornament of sound and an ornament of meaning take place independently of one another.[2]

Sometimes a saṃsṛṣṭi consists of an ornament of sound and an ornament of meaning which are partly in the same scope (Commentary 10.246) (they are interdependent in that way). In that situation, two ornaments constitute a saṅkara only if their scope is one and the same compound (10.257).
