विवेक-विधुरः प्रेयान् यत् तेनाप्य् उपमीयते |
कृशोदरि तवानेन मुखेन मृग-लाञ्छनः ||

viveka-vidhuraḥ preyān yat tenāpy upamīyate |
kṛśodari tavānena mukhena mṛga-lāñchanaḥ ||

Girl, your lover has no sound judgment since he is comparing the moon to your face.

Commentary:

Instead of directly making the upamāna look contemptible, Rudraṭa seemingly depreciates the upameya for that purpose:

vadanam idaṃ samam indoḥ sundaram api te kathaṃ ciraṃ na bhavet |
malinayati yat kapolau locana-salilaṃ hi kajjala-vat ||

“Your face is beautiful too. Why would the moon not compare to it for a long time, since, mixed with eyeliner, the water from your eyes is staining your cheeks?” (Kāvyālaṅkāra 8.77)
