Text 10.137 [Vyāja-stuti]

26. Vyāja-stuti

व्याज-स्तुतिर् मुखे निन्दा स्तुतिर् वा रूढिर् अन्यथा ॥ १०.११२ab ॥

vyāja-stutir mukhe nindā stutir vā rūḍhir anyathā || 10.112ab ||

vyāja-stutiḥ—the ornament called vyāja-stuti; mukhe—in the mouth; nindā—criticism; stutiḥ—praise; —or; rūḍhiḥ—the development (the culmination); anyathā—in the other way.

When faultfinding culminates in an implied praise, or when praise culminates in an implied faultfinding, that is vyāja-stuti (artful praise).

ādau nindā-stutir vā budhyate tayoś ced anyathā rūḍhiḥ paryavasānaṃ syāt tadā vyāja-rūpā vyājena vā stutir vyāja-stutiḥ. vācyābhyāṃ nindā-stutibhyāṃ stuti-ninde cet kramād vyajyete tadety arthaḥ.

If criticism is understood at first and the culmination is praise, then the term vyāja-stuti is analyzed as vyājena stutiḥ (praise under a pretext), but if praise is understood at first and the culmination is criticism, then the derivation is vyāja-rūpā stutiḥ (false praise).
