18. Vyatireka
उपमानाद् यद् अन्यस्य व्यतिरेकः स एव सः ॥ १०.१०५ab ॥
upamānād yad anyasya vyatirekaḥ sa eva saḥ || 10.105ab ||
upamānāt—over the standard of comparison; yat—if (yat = yadi); anyasya—of the other (the upameya); vyatirekaḥ—the special superiority (vi = viśeṣa); saḥ eva—only that (the superiority); saḥ—is that (the vyatireka ornament).
If the upameya is superior to the upamāna, that is vyatireka (contrast).
anyasyopameyasya vyatireka ādhikyam, sa vyatirekākhyo’laṅkāraḥ.
The superiority of the upameya is the ornament called vyatireka.
Commentary:
Jagannātha derives the term vyatireka as follows: upamānād upameyasya guṇa-viśeṣa-vattvenotkarṣo vyatirekaḥ, “The eminence (atireka = utkarṣa) of the upameya over the upamāna on account of having a special quality (vi = viśeṣa = guṇa-viśeṣa-vattvena) is vyatireka” (Rasa-gaṅgādhara, KM p. 346).
