udāharaṇam,
āloki sā bāla-kuraṅga-netrā rādheva rādhā bhuvane’dvitīyā |
adyāpi me santi mano-nikhātās te tat-kaṭākṣā iva tat-kaṭākṣāḥ ||

āloki—was seen; —that well-known; bāla—young; kuraṅga—like [the eyes of] a deer; netrā—whose eyes; rādhaRādhā; iva—like; rādhā—Rādhā; bhuvane—in the world; advitīyā—without a second; adya—now; api—also; me—My; santi—are; manaḥheart; nikhātāḥpiercing; te—those; tat—of Hers; kaṭa-akṣāḥ—sidelong glances; iva—like; tat—of Hers; kaṭa-akṣāḥ—sidelong glances.

She came in the range of my sight. Her eyes are like the eyes of a fawn. Rādhā is like Rādhā. She is unique in the world. Even now Her sidelong glances, only comparable to themselves, pierce My heart. (Alaṅkāra-kaustubha 8.49)

Commentary:

Here ananvaya occurs twice: “Rādhā is like Rādhā” and “Her sidelong glances are only comparable to themselves.”

According to Paṇḍita-rāja Jagannātha, ananvaya (lit. an-anvaya, absence of a connection) is so called because there is no connection of a similarity (a similarity cannot be established).[1] Commenting on this, Nāgeśa Bhaṭṭa explains that according to the moderns, in ananvaya the strikingness is not generated by the perception of the entity’s similarity with itself, rather the strikingness is generated from the understanding that the entity is incomparable. Similarly, in upameyopamā, sometimes called anyonyopamā, the strikingness is generated by the perception that no third entity is comparable to any one of the two.[2]
