Commentary:

The previous examples illustrated punar-uktavad-ābhāsa which did not involve the meaning of the synonym. That kind of punar-uktavad-ābhāsa is an ornament of sound proper. In the next verse, the punar-uktavad-ābhāsa which is an ornament of both sound and meaning is illustrated. Narahari Sarasvatī Tīrtha explains the sense of the above sūtra as follows: The punar-uktavad-ābhāsa which is an ornament of both sound and meaning takes place in the same way the punar-uktavad-ābhāsa which is only an ornament of sound occurs (by a semblance of the repeated usage of the synonym): yathā kevalasya śabdasyālaṅkārāḥ tathā śabdārthayor ubhayor apīty arthaḥ (Bāla-cittānurañjinī).
