स एष वैहासिकता-विनोदैर् व्रजस्य हासोद्गम-संविधाता ।
फणीश्वरेणाद्य विकृष्यमाणः करोति हा नः परिदेवनानि ॥

sa eṣa vaihāsikatā-vinodair vrajasya hāsodgama-saṃvidhātā |
phaṇīśvareṇādya vikṛṣyamāṇaḥ karoti hā naḥ paridevanāni ||

saḥ—He; eṣaḥ—this one (present before the eyes); vaihāsikatā—by being a comedian; vinodaiḥ—by much mirth; vrajasya—of the cowherd community; hāsa—of joy; udgama—of a rise; saṃvidhātā—the maker; phaṇi-īśvareṇa—by the king of snakes; adya—now; vikṛṣyamāṇaḥ—being dragged; karoti—makes; —alas; naḥ—our; paridevanāni—lamentations.

Alas, He who caused the cowherd community to have an upsurge of joy by the mirth of being a comic is now occasioning our lamentations by being dragged by Kāliya. (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 4.8.67)

atra smaryamāṇānāṃ hāsyāṅga-bhūtānāṃ vinodānāṃ śokoddīpakatayā karuṇānukūlyān na virodhaḥ.

Since the mirth, which is an aspect of hāsya and is being remembered, inflames the sorrow, hāsya-rasa (laughter) is not contradictory to karuṇa-rasa (lamentation) because the former is favorable to the latter.
