सञ्चार्य्-आदेर् विरुद्धस्य बाध्यस्योक्तिर् गुणावहा ॥ ७.६३cd ॥

sañcāry-āder viruddhasya bādhyasyoktir guṇāvahā || 7.63cd ||

The mention of a vyabhicāri-bhāva, or of a rasa, and so on, which is adverse to the rasa and which is suppressed is a quality.

bādhyatayoktir na parama-doṣaḥ kintu guṇaś ca prakṛta-rasa-poṣitvāt.

The mention of it as being suppressed is not a big fault, rather it is also a quality because it enhances the rasa which is the actual topic.

Commentary:

Mammaṭa writes: bādhyatvenoktir na parama-doṣaḥ, yāvat prakṛtarasa-paripoṣa-kṛt, “The mention of it as being suppressed is not a big fault, so long as it enhances the rasa which is the actual topic” (Kāvya-prakāśa 7.63). Nāgeśa Bhaṭṭa clarifies that “a mention” means “an understanding.”[1] Narahari Sarasvatī Tīrtha481 and Govinda Ṭhakkura[2] say the sūtra only speaks of a quality (there is no fault at all). This section (7.150-152) treats of exceptions to the fault called pratikūla-vibhāvādi-graha (taking an adverse vibhāva and so on) (7.143).
