कर्णावतंसादि-पदे कर्णादि-ध्वनि-निर्मितिः ।
सन्निधानादि-बोधार्थम् ॥ ७.५८abc ॥

karṇāvataṃsādi-pade karṇādi-dhvani-nirmitiḥ |
sannidhānādi-bodhārtham || 7.58abc ||

In the word karṇāvataṃsa (ornament for the ear), the usage of the word karṇa (ear) is for the sake of causing the perception of the ornament’s nearness to the ear. Similarly, some other words are not redundant.

avataṃsādayaḥ karṇādi-bhūṣāḥ kathyante, tathāpi tatra karṇādi-śabda-vinyāsas teṣāṃ tad-ārūḍhatvādi-bodhāya.

The word avataṃsa already means “ornament for the ear.” Nonetheless, placing the word karṇa with avataṃsa is for the purpose of causing the understanding that the ornament is clinging to the ear.

Commentary:

The section from here to text 7.115 consists of exceptions in the scope of the fault called punar-ukta (redundancy) (7.88). Narahari Sarasvatī Tīrtha says that without the above explanation, the word karṇa (ear) in karṇāvataṃsa (ear ornament for the ear) would be an instance of the fault called apuṣṭa (irrelevant), and the fact that apuṣṭa is first on the list of artha-doṣas (7.84) is the reason Mammaṭa mentions karṇāvataṃsa at the outset.[1] However, Viśvanātha Kavirāja and Śrīvatsa-lañchana Bhaṭṭācārya say karṇāvataṃsa would be an occurrence of punar-ukta (redundancy).[2] Kavikarṇapūra refuses to give ear: He says that although Mammaṭa’s statement is true, the word karṇa, and so on, should not be used.[3] The definition is: puṃsy uttaṃsāvataṃsau dvau karṇapūre ca śekhare, “In the masculine gender, uttaṃsa and avataṃsa both mean either karṇapūra (ear ornament) or śekhara (crest)” (Amara-koṣa 3.3.226).
