Text 4.34

भयानकः,

bhayānakaḥ,

This verse exemplifies bhayānaka-rasa (fear):

daṃṣṭrā-koṭi-kaṭhora-kūṭa-kaṭunā brahmāṇḍa-bhāṇḍa-sthitaṃ sarvaṃ carvayasīva hanta vadanenodgīrṇa-pūrṇārciṣā |
jihvāgreṇa samagram ugra-mahasā lelihyase rodasī trastaṃ mām iha pāhi pāhi bhagavan pārtho’py apārtho’bhavam ||

daṃṣṭrā-koṭi—[the mouth,] in which there are millions of fangs; kaṭhora-kūṭa—[fangs,] which are hard summits; kaṭunā—[by the mouth,] which is acrid; brahmāṇḍa—of the universe; bhāṇḍa—within the casing; sthitam—located; sarvam carvayasi iva—You as if cause everything to be chewed; hanta—alas; vadanena—by means of the mouth; udgīrṇa-pūrṇa-arciṣā—[the mouth,] from which whole flames are ejected; jihvā-agreṇa—with the tip of the tongues; samagram—the entirety; ugra-mahasā—[the tip,] whose power is impetuous; lelihyase—You are repeatedly licking; rodasī—Heaven and Earth; trastam—who am afraid; mām—me; iha—at this time; pāhi pāhi—protect, protect; bhagavan—O Lord; pārthaḥ—Pārtha (“the son of Pṛthā”); api—although; apārthaḥ—useless; abhavam—I have become.

Alas, with Your acrid mouths, whose millions of fangs are hard summits, and from which whole flames shoot forth, You are as if making everything within the universal shell predigested. With the tips of Your tongues, whose power is impetuous, You are repeatedly licking Heaven and Earth in their entirety. O Lord, protect me. Save me. I am terrified. Though I am Pārtha, I have become apārtha (useless). (Alaṅkāra-kaustubha 5.21)
