तत्र सम्भोगो विप्रलम्भश् चेति शृङ्गारस्य द्वौ भेदौ। तत्रानुरक्तयोर् यूनोर् अन्योन्यालिङ्गनादि-हेतु-भूता रतिर् विभावादि-संयोगात् सम्भोगः। स च मिथो वीक्षाश्लेषाधर-चुम्बाद्य्-अनन्त-भेदत्वाद् अपरिच्छेद्य इत्य् एक एव गण्यते।

tatra sambhogo vipralambhaś ceti śṛṅgārasya dvau bhedau. tatrānuraktayor yūnor anyonyāliṅganādi-hetu-bhūtā ratir vibhāvādi-saṃyogāt sambhogaḥ. sa ca mitho vīkṣāśleṣādhara-cumbādy-ananta-bhedatvād aparicchedya ity eka eva gaṇyate.

The two varieties of śṛṅgāra (love) are sambhoga (meeting) and vipralambha (separation). In śṛṅgāra, rati (affection) is the cause of the mutual embrace, and so on, of two young persons in love. Sambhoga occurs from the blend of vibhāvas and so on. Sambhoga is counted only as one: Subvarieties are not enumerated because it cannot be delimitated, since there are unlimited subvarieties such as gazing, embracing, and kissing.
