अतादृशि गुणी-भूत-व्यङ्ग्यं व्यङ्ग्ये तु मध्यमम् ॥ १.५ab॥
atādṛśi guṇī-bhūta-vyaṅgyaṃ vyaṅgye tu madhyamam ||1.5ab ||
atādṛśi—is not like that; guṇī-bhūta—that has become secondary [to the literal meaning, in terms of astonishment]; vyaṅgyam—an implied meaning; vyaṅgye—when the implied sense; tu—however; madhyamam—average.
When the implied sense is not like the above, poetry is average and is called guṇī-bhūta-vyaṅgya.
vācyād acāruṇi vyaṅgye tad idaṃ madhyamaṃ kāvyaṃ guṇī-bhūta-vyaṅgyam ity abhidhīyate.
When the implied meaning is not more beautiful than the literal sense, that is second-rate poetry, called guṇī-bhūta-vyaṅgya.
Commentary:
Second-rate poetry is called guṇī-bhūta-vyaṅgya because it contains a guṇī-bhūta-vyaṅgya (second-rate implied sense). This is the topic of chapter five.
