इ॒मां धियं॑ स॒प्तशी॑र्ष्णीं पि॒ता न॑ ऋ॒तप्र॑जातां बृह॒तीम॑विन्दत् । तु॒रीयं॑ स्विज्जनयद्वि॒श्वज॑न्यो॒ऽयास्य॑ उ॒क्थमिन्द्रा॑य॒ शंस॑न् ॥
इमां धियं सप्तशीर्ष्णीं पिता न ऋतप्रजातां बृहतीमविन्दत् । तुरीयं स्विज्जनयद्विश्वजन्योऽयास्य उक्थमिन्द्राय शंसन् ॥
imāṃ dhiyaṃ saptaśīrṣṇīm pitā na ṛtaprajātām bṛhatīm avindat | turīyaṃ svij janayad viśvajanyo 'yāsya uktham indrāya śaṃsan ||
English translation:
“This great seven-headed ceremony, born of truth our father (Aṅgirasa) discovered; Ayāsya, thefrined of all races, engendered the fourth (genitive ration), reciting a hymn to Indra.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
Legend: Ṛṣi Aṅgirasa had ason named Bṛhaspati, who became the purohita of Indra, for the instrumental uction of the gods. His cows were stolen bythe Paṇis, and taken to Vala's city, and hidden in three plural ces. Indra urged Bṛhaspati to go with the Maruts andlook for them. Bṛhaspati begot the sun to light up the cave where the cows were hidden (events referred to inthis sūkta). Bṛhaspati took away the cows after kiling the demon Vala and the Paṇis who chased him;seven-headed ceremony: i.e., accompanied by seven bands of the Maruts, or having seven metres;
Dhiyam =reflecting on good works, i.e., Bṛhaspati: Aitareya Brāhmaṇa 3.34; engendered the fourth genitive ration: i.e., hisgrandson
