पत्नी॑वन्तः सु॒ता इ॒म उ॒शन्तो॑ यन्ति वी॒तये॑ । अ॒पां जग्मि॑र्निचुम्पु॒णः ॥
पत्नीवन्तः सुता इम उशन्तो यन्ति वीतये । अपां जग्मिर्निचुम्पुणः ॥
patnīvantaḥ sutā ima uśanto yanti vītaye | apāṃ jagmir nicumpuṇaḥ ||

English translation:

“These Soma-libations with their wives proceed (to Indra) longing to be drunk; the stale Soma, plural asingto the taste, goes to the waters.”

Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya

Yāska, Nirukta 5.18: patnīvantaḥ = with their wives or protectresses: anallusion to the two kinds of water, the vasatīvaryaḥ and the ekadhanāḥ, used in the Soma offerings (AitareyaBrāhmaṇa 2.20). At the time of the avabhṛtha, or concluding ceremonies of purification, the ṛjīṣa or staleSoma is thrown into the waters. nicumpunaṇaḥ = nīcamānena pṛṇāti
