Rig Veda 8.25.4
Sanskrit text [Accents, Plain, Transliterated]:
म॒हान्ता॑ मि॒त्रावरु॑णा स॒म्राजा॑ दे॒वावसु॑रा । ऋ॒तावा॑नावृ॒तमा घो॑षतो बृ॒हत् ॥
महान्ता मित्रावरुणा सम्राजा देवावसुरा । ऋतावानावृतमा घोषतो बृहत् ॥
mahāntā mitrāvaruṇā samrājā devāv asurā | ṛtāvānāv ṛtam ā ghoṣato bṛhat ||
English translation:
“The great Mitra and Varuṇa, the two sovereign and powerful deities, the observers of truth, illumine oursolemn rite.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
Sovereign: samrājā = perfectly resplendent, samyag dīpyamānau;
Powerrful: asura = impellingby being the indwelling principle, antaryāmitayā prerakam;
Illumine: ghoṣataḥ = svadīyā prakāśayataḥ.Comment: repeated references to battles with asuras can, therefore, be interpreted as an allegory: removing thebaser metals from a pyrite ore or quartz, to yield the pure silver and gold-- electrum, Soma, the resplendent, therājā (cf. Chāndogya Upaniṣad: eṣa somo rājā, tad devānām annam, tam devā bhakṣyanti
