इन्द्र॒ पिब॒ वृष॑धूतस्य॒ वृष्ण॒ आ यं ते॑ श्ये॒न उ॑श॒ते ज॒भार॑ । यस्य॒ मदे॑ च्या॒वय॑सि॒ प्र कृ॒ष्टीर्यस्य॒ मदे॒ अप॑ गो॒त्रा व॒वर्थ॑ ॥
इन्द्र पिब वृषधूतस्य वृष्ण आ यं ते श्येन उशते जभार । यस्य मदे च्यावयसि प्र कृष्टीर्यस्य मदे अप गोत्रा ववर्थ ॥
indra piba vṛṣadhūtasya vṛṣṇa ā yaṃ te śyena uśate jabhāra | yasya made cyāvayasi pra kṛṣṭīr yasya made apa gotrā vavartha ||
English translation:
“Drink, Indra, of the bountiful (libation) expressed by the beneficent (stones); that which the falcon has borne to you desiring it, in whose exhilaration you cast down (opposing) men, in whose exhilaration you have set open the clouds.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
That which the falcon: A legend in Aitareya Brāhmaṇa, Pañcikā III, Adhyāya 13: Soma grew formerly only in heaven, the ṛsis and the gods considered how it might be brought down to earth, and desired the Chāndasas, the metres of the Vedas, to bring it; changing themselves to birds (suparṇas), they undertook the office; the only one who succeeded, however, was the gāyatrī, in the shape of a hawk (śyenī), and she was wounded by an arrow shot by one of the somapālas, or gandharvas, the guardians of the Soma, thence termed somabhrājās, which cut off anail of her left foot; the ichor (blood-tinged discharge) from the wound became the vasā of the burnt offering
