प्रति॑ घो॒राणा॒मेता॑नाम॒यासां॑ म॒रुतां॑ शृण्व आय॒तामु॑प॒ब्दिः । ये मर्त्यं॑ पृतना॒यन्त॒मूमै॑ॠणा॒वानं॒ न प॒तय॑न्त॒ सर्गै॑: ॥
प्रति घोराणामेतानामयासां मरुतां शृण्व आयतामुपब्दिः । ये मर्त्यं पृतनायन्तमूमैॠणावानं न पतयन्त सर्गैः ॥
prati ghorāṇām etānām ayāsām marutāṃ śṛṇva āyatām upabdiḥ | ye martyam pṛtanāyantam ūmair ṛṇāvānaṃ na patayanta sargaiḥ ||
English translation:
“The noise of the formidable, dark-coloured, swift-moving and advancing Maruts, is everywhere echoed; (the noise) of them who strike down their mortal (foes) gathering in a host against them, by their self-defending blows, as (they strike down) a contemptible enemy.”
Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya
Ṛnāvānam = a contemptible enemy; it may imply a debtor, as if the cloud was debtor to the winds for its contents
