तथैवैतिह्यम् अप्यवितथम् आप्तोपदेश एवेति ॥ १११ ॥
tathaivaitihyam apyavitatham āptopadeśa eveti || 111 ||
Text (111): Similarly Tradition also, when true, is only Trustworthy Assertion.—(IX-ii-5).

The conjunct nipāta in the form of ‘iti ha’ is used iu the sense of continued tradition; and the affix ‘ṣyaṅ’ (in the word ‘aitihya’) has the reflexive sense. As for false Tradition, it cannot be a means of right knowledge; and true Tradition would only be a form of ‘Ttustworthy Assertion’; and ‘Trustworthy Assertion’ has been shown to be a form of ‘Inference’; hence Tradition, when true, does not differ from ‘Inference.’
