Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

तमापतन्तं सहसा कालानलसमप्रभम् ।
चिच्छेद समरे द्रौणिर्दर्शयन्पाणिलाघवम् ।
शिखण्डिनं च विव्याध शरैर्बहुभिरायसैः ॥ ३४ ॥

tamāpatantaṃ sahasā kālānalasamaprabham |
ciccheda samare drauṇirdarśayanpāṇilāghavam |
śikhaṇḍinaṃ ca vivyādha śarairbahubhirāyasaiḥ || 34 ||
