Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. षष्टिं वर्षसहस्राणि षष्टिमेव शतानि च ।
आदित्यतापतप्तास्ते विशन्ति शशिमण्डलम् ॥ ३१ ॥

ṣaṣṭiṃ varṣasahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭimeva śatāni ca |
ādityatāpataptāste viśanti śaśimaṇḍalam || 31 ||
