Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

ततः श्रेण्यः शलभानामिवोग्राः समापेतुर्विशिखानां प्रदीप्ताः ।
समाचिनोच्चापि भृशं शरीरं हयान्सूतं सरथं चैव मह्यम् ॥ १३ ॥

tataḥ śreṇyaḥ śalabhānāmivogrāḥ samāpeturviśikhānāṃ pradīptāḥ |
samācinoccāpi bhṛśaṃ śarīraṃ hayānsūtaṃ sarathaṃ caiva mahyam || 13 ||
