Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

चक्षुः श्रोत्रे नासिका त्वक्च जिह्वा ज्ञानस्यैतान्यायतनानि जन्तोः ।
तानि प्रीतान्येव तृष्णाक्षयान्ते तान्यव्यथो दुःखहीनः प्रणुद्यात् ॥ २४ ॥

tāni prītānyeva tṛṣṇākṣayānte tānyavyatho duḥkhahīnaḥ praṇudyāt || 24 ||
