Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अनुज्ञातः संजय स्वस्ति गच्छ न नोऽकार्षीरप्रियं जातु किंचित् ।
विद्मश्च त्वा ते च वयं च सर्वे शुद्धात्मानं मध्यगतं सभास्थम् ॥ ३ ॥
