Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. तथा राजन्यो रक्षणं वै प्रजानां कृत्वा धर्मेणाप्रमत्तोऽथ दत्त्वा ।
यज्ञैरिष्ट्वा सर्ववेदानधीत्य दारान्कृत्वा पुण्यकृदावसेद्गृहान् ॥ २२ ॥
