Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अवजित्य धनं चापि विराटो वाहिनीपतिः ।
प्राविशन्नगरं हृष्टश्चतुर्भिः सह पाण्डवैः ॥ १ ॥

avajitya dhanaṃ cāpi virāṭo vāhinīpatiḥ |
prāviśannagaraṃ hṛṣṭaścaturbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ || 1 ||
