Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

उष्णे वा यदि वा शीते रात्रौ वा यदि वा दिवा ।
आदिष्टो न विकल्पेत स राजवसतिं वसेत् ॥ ३९ ॥

uṣṇe vā yadi vā śīte rātrau vā yadi vā divā |
ādiṣṭo na vikalpeta sa rājavasatiṃ vaset || 39 ||
