Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु द्युमत्सेनो महावने ।
लब्धचक्षुः प्रसन्नात्मा दृष्ट्या सर्वं ददर्श ह ॥ १ ॥

etasminneva kāle tu dyumatseno mahāvane |
labdhacakṣuḥ prasannātmā dṛṣṭyā sarvaṃ dadarśa ha || 1 ||
