Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. समेत्य पार्थेन यथैकरात्रमूषुः समास्तत्र तदा चतस्रः ।
पूर्वाश्च षट्ता दश पाण्डवानां शिवा बभूवुर्वसतां वनेषु ॥ ५ ॥

sametya pārthena yathaikarātramūṣuḥ samāstatra tadā catasraḥ |
pūrvāśca ṣaṭtā daśa pāṇḍavānāṃ śivā babhūvurvasatāṃ vaneṣu || 5 ||
