Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा उपासन्ते महेश्वरम् ।
तत्र स्नात्वार्चयित्वा च रुद्रं देवगणैर्वृतम् ।
जन्मप्रभृति पापानि कृतानि नुदते नरः ॥ ८९ ॥

yatra brahmādayo devā upāsante maheśvaram |
tatra snātvārcayitvā ca rudraṃ devagaṇairvṛtam |
janmaprabhṛti pāpāni kṛtāni nudate naraḥ || 89 ||
