Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. प्रातिपीयाः शांतनवाश्च राजन्काव्यां वाचं शृणुत मात्यगाद्वः ।
वैश्वानरं प्रज्वलितं सुघोरमयुद्धेन प्रशमयतोत्पतन्तम् ॥ ७ ॥

prātipīyāḥ śāṃtanavāśca rājankāvyāṃ vācaṃ śṛṇuta mātyagādvaḥ |
vaiśvānaraṃ prajvalitaṃ sughoramayuddhena praśamayatotpatantam || 7 ||
