Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सोऽब्रवीदर्जुनं चैव वासुदेवं च सात्वतम् ।
लोकप्रवीरौ तिष्ठन्तौ खाण्डवस्य समीपतः ॥ १ ॥

vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca |
so'bravīdarjunaṃ caiva vāsudevaṃ ca sātvatam |
lokapravīrau tiṣṭhantau khāṇḍavasya samīpataḥ || 1 ||
