Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

मैवं शुचो मा रुद देवयानि न त्वादृशी मर्त्यमनुप्रशोचेत् ।
सुराश्च विश्वे च जगच्च सर्वमुपस्थितां वैकृतिमानमन्ति ॥ ३६ ॥

maivaṃ śuco mā ruda devayāni na tvādṛśī martyamanupraśocet |
surāśca viśve ca jagacca sarvamupasthitāṃ vaikṛtimānamanti || 36 ||
