Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

तं दष्टं पन्नगेन्द्रेण तेनाग्निसमतेजसा ।
पाण्डवानां कुलकरं राजानममितौजसम् ।
गच्छामि सौम्य त्वरितं सद्यः कर्तुमपज्वरम् ॥ ३७ ॥

taṃ daṣṭaṃ pannagendreṇa tenāgnisamatejasā |
pāṇḍavānāṃ kulakaraṃ rājānamamitaujasam |
gacchāmi saumya tvaritaṃ sadyaḥ kartumapajvaram || 37 ||
