Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

शौनक उवाच ।
कथं तदमृतं देवैर्मथितं क्व च शंस मे ।
यत्र जज्ञे महावीर्यः सोऽश्वराजो महाद्युतिः ॥ ४ ॥

kathaṃ tadamṛtaṃ devairmathitaṃ kva ca śaṃsa me |
yatra jajñe mahāvīryaḥ so'śvarājo mahādyutiḥ || 4 ||
