Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

तां तु रक्षस्ततो ब्रह्मन्हृच्छयेनाभिपीडितम् ।
दृष्ट्वा हृष्टमभूत्तत्र जिहीर्षुस्तामनिन्दिताम् ॥ १६ ॥

tāṃ tu rakṣastato brahmanhṛcchayenābhipīḍitam |
dṛṣṭvā hṛṣṭamabhūttatra jihīrṣustāmaninditām || 16 ||
