Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. संख्याता बहुवृत्तान्ताः श्लोकाग्रं चात्र शस्यते ।
त्रीणि श्लोकसहस्राणि द्वे शते विंशतिस्तथा ।
मुनिना संप्रणीतानि कौरवाणां यशोभृताम् ॥ १७७ ॥
