Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. सप्तषष्टिरथो पूर्णा श्लोकाग्रमपि मे शृणु ।
श्लोकानां द्वे सहस्रे तु श्लोकाः पञ्चाशदेव तु ।
पर्वण्यस्मिन्समाख्याताः संख्यया परमर्षिणा ॥ १३५ ॥
