Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. इत्युक्तः स द्विजश्रेष्ठो व्यासशिष्यः प्रतापवान् ।
प्रोवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठस्तं नृपं जनमेजयम् ॥ ३ ॥
