Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

ततो वित्तं विविधं संनिधाय यथोत्साहं कारयित्वा च कोशम् ।
अनुज्ञातो गुरुणा संनिवृत्य शशास गामखिलां सागरान्ताम् ॥ ३४ ॥

tato vittaṃ vividhaṃ saṃnidhāya yathotsāhaṃ kārayitvā ca kośam |
anujñāto guruṇā saṃnivṛtya śaśāsa gāmakhilāṃ sāgarāntām || 34 ||
