Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. प्रकाशार्थगतिर्नूनं रहस्यकुशलः कृती ।
तज्ज्ञैर्न पूज्यसे नूनं तेनासि हरिणः कृशः ॥ १८ ॥

prakāśārthagatirnūnaṃ rahasyakuśalaḥ kṛtī |
tajjñairna pūjyase nūnaṃ tenāsi hariṇaḥ kṛśaḥ || 18 ||
