Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः स तु तं प्राह कुतः कीट सुखं तव ।
मरणं ते सुखं मन्ये तिर्यग्योनौ हि वर्तसे ॥ १४ ॥

bhīṣma uvāca |
ityuktaḥ sa tu taṃ prāha kutaḥ kīṭa sukhaṃ tava |
maraṇaṃ te sukhaṃ manye tiryagyonau hi vartase || 14 ||
