Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. स्वाध्यायैस्तु महत्पापं तरन्ति गृहमेधिनः ।
दानैः पृथग्विधैश्चापि यथा प्राहुर्मनीषिणः ॥ २१ ॥

svādhyāyaistu mahatpāpaṃ taranti gṛhamedhinaḥ |
dānaiḥ pṛthagvidhaiścāpi yathā prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ || 21 ||
