Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. शतेन निष्कं गणितं सहस्रेण च संमितम् ।
यथा बहु प्रतीच्छन्हि पापिष्ठां लभते गतिम् ॥ २६ ॥

śatena niṣkaṃ gaṇitaṃ sahasreṇa ca saṃmitam |
yathā bahu pratīcchanhi pāpiṣṭhāṃ labhate gatim || 26 ||
