Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. च्यवन उवाच ।
अवश्यं कथनीयं मे तवैतन्नरपुंगव ।
यदर्थं त्वाहमुच्छेत्तुं संप्राप्तो मनुजाधिप ॥ १ ॥

avaśyaṃ kathanīyaṃ me tavaitannarapuṃgava |
yadarthaṃ tvāhamucchettuṃ saṃprāpto manujādhipa || 1 ||
