Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. यस्मात्तण्डिः पुरा प्राह तेन तण्डिकृतोऽभवत् ।
स्वर्गाच्चैवात्र भूलोकं तण्डिना ह्यवतारितः ॥ २२ ॥

svargāccaivātra bhūlokaṃ taṇḍinā hyavatāritaḥ || 22 ||
