Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. हिरण्यगर्भप्रमुखा देवाः सेन्द्रा महर्षयः ।
न विदुर्यस्य निधनमादिं वा सूक्ष्मदर्शिनः ।
स कथं नरमात्रेण शक्यो ज्ञातुं सतां गतिः ॥ ७ ॥

na viduryasya nidhanamādiṃ vā sūkṣmadarśinaḥ |
sa kathaṃ naramātreṇa śakyo jñātuṃ satāṃ gatiḥ || 7 ||
