Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

लुब्धक उवाच ।
वृत्रं हत्वा देवराट्श्रेष्ठभाग्वै यज्ञं हत्वा भागमवाप चैव ।
शूली देवो देववृत्तं कुरु त्वं क्षिप्रं सर्पं जहि मा भूद्विशङ्का ॥ २५ ॥
