Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. ते कार्तयुगधर्माणो भागाः परमसत्कृताः ।
प्रापुरादित्यवर्णं तं पुरुषं तमसः परम् ।
बृहन्तं सर्वगं देवमीशानं वरदं प्रभुम् ॥ ५० ॥

te kārtayugadharmāṇo bhāgāḥ paramasatkṛtāḥ |
prāpurādityavarṇaṃ taṃ puruṣaṃ tamasaḥ param |
bṛhantaṃ sarvagaṃ devamīśānaṃ varadaṃ prabhum || 50 ||
